How to Treat Rosacea

How to Treat Rosacea

Rosacea is a widespread skin disorder affecting people primarily over the age of thirty.  It is characterised by redness on the face, especially on the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead.  There are three elements – redness, multiple obvious blood vessels, and less commonly, red blotchy acne-type lesions.  Sometimes, the affected skin areas can feel sensitive or tender.

Rosacea is a chronic, recurring condition, usually with no identifiable cause.

It can cause embarrassment and distress if severe, and many affected people end up spending a large amount of effort and money on ineffective topical treatments and on cosmetics to cover up the problem.

Lifestyle factors may exacerbate Rosacea, for example, extreme weather conditions, heated work or home environment, alcohol, anxiety – but they do not cause Rosacea.

Over-the-counter topical creams from a Pharmacy usually are ineffective. Some topical and oral treatments prescribed by GP’s are effective in some cases.

However it is important to realise that Rosacea is predominantly a vascular problem caused by the proliferation of surface blood vessels (capillaries and arterioles) and that effective treatment must be directed at this vascular element.

Vascular Laser treatment is by far the most effective treatment.  Firstly the larger more obvious blood vessels are eliminated individually by a fine laser beam, then the background vascularity is addressed with a broader beam, through gel on the skin. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is also useful and added to the laser treatment.

Rosacea is also an inflammatory condition in some sufferers, especially those with the acne-type blotches.  These patients require a course of anti-inflammatory tablets (usually a tetracycline antibiotic) as well as the vascular treatment.
