Microdermabrasion – The Facts
Dr Ron Louis from Skin Dr SA discusses Microdermabrasion: What it does for your skin, how long the treatment lasts, and what he feels are better alternatives.
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a treatment used to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. In a sandpaper-like fashion, a fine jet of crystal particles exfoliates the outermost, dead skin particles. Following microdermabrasion, your skin will feel smoother and give a more youthful appearance.
How long does the treatment last?
Because our skin is continually changing and regrowing, microdermabrasion cannot provide a sustained, long-term result. If you are using microdermabrasion to fix a skin problem, there is a good chance the same issues will reappear after a short period of time following treatment.
Is microdermabrasion effective?
Microdermabrasion does deliver what it offers, for a short period of time, but the problem is that those results don’t last. The treatment is great for anyone looking to improve the appearance and feel of their skin for an upcoming event like a wedding or ay special occasion.
Alternatives to microdermabrasion
There are a number of prescription strength creams which offer a more viable and long-term solution to removing old skin cells. These creams can achieve the same result as microdermabrasion at a fraction of the cost – a jar of cream that will last three months, can cost less than one micro treatment!
While microdermabrasion can effectively remove dead skin cells in the short-term, the technique is not a viable solution to treat deeper skin problems like acne scars, wrinkles or skin pigmentation.
How to treat deeper skin problems
As microdermabrasion can only effectively target the skins surface cells, deeper skin problems require more comprehensive treatment options. There are a number of effective (both for result and cost) solutions to treat these deeper skin issues.
Acne scars and wrinkles
Micro-needling (Dermapen treatment) is an effective solution to controlling acne scars and wrinkles.
Topical and laser treatments effectively target skin pigmentation issues at a deeper skin level.
